When life is busy with work, family, and everything in between, it’s easy to put estate planning on the back burner. But having a solid estate plan isn’t just for the wealthy or the elderly—it’s one of the most important steps you can take to protect your loved ones and ensure your wishes are honored, no matter what the future holds.
At RZA Legal, we work with families across Northern Colorado to build thoughtful, comprehensive estate plans. Here’s what you should know.
What Is an Estate Plan?
An estate plan is a collection of legal documents that outline your wishes for what happens to your assets, your dependents, and your healthcare if you become incapacitated or pass away. An Essential Estate Plan includes:
Last Will and Testament – This document outlines how you want your property distributed after your death and names guardians for minor children.
Medical Power of Attorney – This allows someone you trust to make medical decisions on your behalf if you are unable to communicate.
Durable Financial Power of Attorney – This authorizes someone to handle your finances if you become incapacitated, including paying bills, managing accounts, and handling legal matters.
Living Will (Advance Directive) – This expresses your preferences about end-of-life care, including life-sustaining treatments and comfort measures. If your Living Will doesn’t address it, your medical providers will turn to the agent under your Medical Power of Attorney for further direction if you are unable to communicate.
Why You Need an Estate Plan in Colorado
Estate planning is about far more than just “who gets what.” Without a plan in place, Colorado law—not you—will decide how your estate is handled. That can lead to confusion, delays, and unintended consequences for the people you care about most.
Here in Northern Colorado, families often have unique needs, from multigenerational living arrangements to ownership of real estate, mineral rights, businesses, and investment properties. Whether you’re a young couple just starting out, a growing family with kids, or retirees ready to enjoy your next chapter, estate planning gives you control and peace of mind.
Assets You Should Plan For
Every family’s situation is different, but here are some common assets we help clients address in their estate plans:
- Real estate (primary homes, rentals, vacation properties, ranches)
- Bank and investment accounts
- Retirement accounts (IRAs, 401(k)s)
- Life insurance policies
- Vehicles and personal property
- Business ownership interests
- Digital assets (social media, online accounts)
Good estate planning also includes beneficiary designations and may involve trusts to help avoid probate, minimize taxes, or protect assets for minor children.
